031.023 firmware update – change log


Following changes I can notice after upgrading to new firmware version 031.023.

  • New Application – Internet radio – To the radio application new internet radio was added. Sam application as I mentioned in previous post.
  • New Application – Smart Connect (SC) – Application that allow you to create a group of WIFI and 3G connection. I’ll review it in another post
  • New Application – Advanced Communications Manager (Ad. CM. ) – Application that provide the ability to block calls and SMS from users. I’ll review it in another post.
  • New application – Bloomberg -You read about it in my previous post here.

    I have updated my E72 and also notice that there is now a White Theme. Can’t say if it runs better though it might (I am sure it does except that it would take measurement!). Going into my second week with the phone and I’m very happy I got it!

    why did they include smart connect in the update when you can already replicate this function using “destinations”? Plus, it doesnt work. hahaha.. I used to use it on my E71, and it worked fine. I put a new connection on my E72, and used that as my access point on my browser. Obviously, you can just go into your wifi scan link on the home page and say “start Browsing” in which case you’ll use that network. But if you choose the internet globe on top, one of your shortcut keys, it says connecting, then it falls back to the bookmarks page, you click a bookmark, it says connecting and once again, back to the bookmarks. No sites. Totally lame.

    The E72 is really just hopelessly flawed. nothing seems to work quite the way it should, or how it used to on the E71. I pray one day they’ll figure this out, but I suspect I’ll have moved on to a new model by then. Grrr

    also James, you can download threadSMS on Ovi, and for a small fee, you can have threaded sms. The other option is to use “conversations” on nokia beta labs. I finally got it to work on my E72 the other day, but guess what, it doesnt work with the firmware update I did today. I swear, I want to strangle someone at nokia lately….

    Geoffs, thanks. I noticed the firmware update yesterday. When I updated I got a “Firmware update failed” (ovi suite) and “internal error, cannot read tracks”. When I rebooted my phone the new firmware is installed except no bloomberg app. The device manager reflects the new firmware but the “Latest update” date shows 02/10, the previous firmwares update. I’m confused….

    Geoff, took your advice and purchased threadsms. I like it. Finally sms like I enjoyed on an old Palm I used a long time ago. I don’t know why Nokia doesn’t support this on at least it’s smart phones. I hear the N8 will support it though.

    Oh, one other thing – there IS a reason for the inclusion of birdstep smart connect. Destinations was derived from this, but the people who developed some apps did not necessarily keep this in mind, so they didnt produce apps that could USE destinations. Destinations and smart connect do the same thing, but since destinations wasnt usable by all apps, smart connect is basically a fix for that gap. For example, nokia messaging forces you to use a single access point. So if you set up smart connect as a group of connections to become a single access point, then you can get nokia messaging to act as if it DOES work with destinations.

    James – i bet you used to like Datebk6 too as the Palm PIM of choice. Unfortunately, the closest you can get to that on S60 for e72 is SBSH calendar. No PIM for e72 has floating timed tasks. Gr…….

    I have E72 phone until now i am not able to use. almost connection error, not out going and incoming call, some time is ok. 3 time i send nokia services center and update the phone, but not yet finish the problems.

    Same prob as you Noufal (and many others) though I blamed mine on the iphones that are eating up bandwith in San Francisco. But my phone has so many problems that it could be that it’s just a lemon, and the connection error is just one of the many.

    Does anyone know how to get the update to work in the US? I’ve tried both checking through the *#0000# menu and the Nokia Updater software and both tell me that no update is available.

    I am hoping for a fix to the firmware so that the 7 key works in some apps (because playing Sudoku without it is hard).

    Hmmm. Maybe if I try one of those public VPN services that mask my IP. Has anyone tried that for software updates?

    Hi,
    I did try to update the firmware on my E72.
    I tried the device (E72) to update. But no luck. It says no server profile defined. Hence I went ahead en tried to define a server profile as mentioned on http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/faq#faq1.
    But no luck.
    I then used Ovi Suite to update it, but it also was stuck at an error message. Ovi Suite is unable to detect your phone. THis happened during the upgrade. It instructed me to disconnect, switch off and then Retry. I did that a couple of times (Hopefully the phone is still working), but the firmware was not upgraded. I then tried to use the Nokia software update tool, but that also failed with the USB issue.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I noticed that the (shortcut) key mapping for the Main menu has become faster, but at the same time key 7 and 8 are not mapped??? Has anyone noticed the same?
    I also feel the they could have improved on the time taken to switch on flashlight by pressing the space-bar key (unlike E63.)
    BTW, shouldn’t we folks also get the car holder accessory that’s being provided free with a new phone?

    Hi Talal,
    Depending on which part of the world you are, the update may or may not apply to you. If your phone is configured to go online then you would either receive an alert or you can manually check by going to Menu -> Ctrl. Panel -> Phone -> SW Update.

    Hi fellow E-72 owners
    My phone has 022.007 and Telenor-Norway is the operator. I have experienced that I must wait – patiently – for the 031.023 to arrive for my model (0595214).
    Having had phones form Siemens, Sony Ericsson, HTC aso – I find it annoying having to wait for a serious update for my Nokia. I dream of a simple “update anyway” solution … :)

    I have had my E72, in Israel, since the end of December 2009 already. It’s absolutely the best phone I ever saw and I’m quite sure it shoots every iPhone or Android straight out of the water.

    The update however brought a few issues for me, which do seem to have lessened in severity recently:
    * battery life seemed to be way less after the update, but now, 2 weeks later, this seems to be back to normal, with no explanation;
    * the phone was very slow, with menus often taking a lot of time to open and things getting messed up on the screen; this also seems to have disappeared now.

    Altogether I love this phone and wouldn’t exchange it for 10 free iPhone 4s.

    When I attempt to upgrade the firmware in my E72 through Nokia Software Updater the following happens: -

    The phone downloads the entire 185.2 mb file success fully.

    However when it tries to install the update it fails. I get the message ” Nokia Software Updater has lost connection with your device”.

    Can anyone guide me what course should I follow now.

    I’m moving to Israel and I want to know how Nokia E72 GPS maps works there? Is it easy to donload the maps? Do they charge for it or for the GPS use in Israel?

    guys does anyone notice that the ‘save page’ option is not available in the default browser. Whatever you say, but i like the default browser coz unlike opera or any other browser, it opens all pages without failure. But just this thing missing makes it look bad. Is there a newer update available than 031.023?
